What changed

The 2026 Fortune Global 500 Forum opened in Guangzhou on September 16, bringing together major global companies, investment institutions and research organisations around the theme “New Growth Equation.” The 500 companies on this year’s list reported combined revenue of $43.1 trillion and net profit of $3.39 trillion, both record highs. Amazon ranked first for the first time, while Nvidia climbed from 222nd in 2024 to 28th.

Why it matters

The numbers point to a shift in where corporate growth is being made. Technology companies led the 20 industries with roughly 21% revenue growth, and the forum’s central question was whether artificial intelligence can become operating capability rather than remain a polished presentation slide.

That puts chips, computing power and infrastructure at the centre of the business conversation. Investment institutions may look more closely at companies supplying those foundations, while large technology firms have stronger incentives to keep directing capital towards them. The forum itself produced discussion, not announced investments or binding commitments.

The wider test will come outside the technology sector. If industrial and service companies turn AI into recurring work, competitors that move slowly could face higher pressure over the next six to 12 months. If infrastructure costs, implementation difficulty or uncertain returns hold adoption back, AI spending may remain concentrated among the biggest technology companies instead.

My informed outlook is that companies will pursue targeted deployments and infrastructure partnerships, but unevenly. That path depends on finding practical operating uses for AI and securing chips and computing capacity without damaging the economics of the projects.

What to watch next

The clearest signal will be whether Global 500 companies disclose specific spending on AI, chips, computing or infrastructure tied to production activity. Also watch whether industrial and service-sector companies report recurring operational use, rather than pilots, and whether technology remains the fastest-growing of the 20 industries in the next annual ranking.
