China and Peru are piloting a new mutual recognition system for fruit cold-treatment supervision on the "Qianke-Shanghai" sea route. The first batch, 12.2 tonnes of fresh blueberries shipped on COSCO Shipping's WSA5 line, arrived at Shanghai port with customs verifying Peruvian probe data rather than manually re-checking every container. This process cut single-container inspection time by nearly half a day.

Why it matters

Shanghai handles over 70% of China’s Peruvian fruit imports, meaning this pilot directly reshapes the logistics cost for a massive slice of the national market. For Peruvian growers, the primary benefit is time: reducing customs delay by 12 hours means the fruit arrives fresher, which is the single most valuable attribute for a high-margin crop like blueberries. This efficiency shift lowers the total clearance cost for exporters, allowing them to retain more margin or pass savings to distributors.

The route itself is proving its value as a two-way trade artery. While blueberries head east, Shanghai's Waigaoqiao port has dispatched seven roll-on/roll-off ships to Qianke this year, carrying 4,770 new energy vehicles. The "Qianke-Shanghai" line has operated 170 sailings in the first eight months of 2026, moving 141,000 tonnes of cargo worth 4.04 billion yuan. If the data recognition model proves reliable, it could expand to other high-value Peruvian fruits like grapes and cherries, further cementing the port as the primary gateway for South American produce in Asia. However, the system remains a pilot; if data discrepancies or quarantine issues arise, customs may reinstate manual checks, negating the efficiency gains.
