China Opens Joint Military Support and Training Base in Laos

What changed

China has opened a jointly maintained military logistics and training base at Ban Keun Airport in Laos. The China-Laos Military Joint Support and Training Center began operations Tuesday, alongside the China-Laos Friendship Aviation Academy.

China’s Ministry of Defense says the center will help train Lao air-force pilots. Laos has a small air force that mainly uses Chinese and Soviet equipment.

Why it matters

This gives the People’s Liberation Army an operating site beyond China’s borders and deepens its military relationship with Laos. The immediate focus is training and logistics, but the arrangement also places Chinese support closer to a Lao air force already dependent on Chinese equipment.

The practical reach of the new center is still unclear. Its staffing, aircraft access and future missions have not been stated, so its significance will depend on whether it remains a training facility or develops broader military functions.
