China pledged to “firmly support” Cuba in defending its sovereignty and resisting outside interference, as Washington escalates pressure on Havana. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun made the statement in Beijing on Monday, during a briefing marking 66 years of diplomatic relations between China and Cuba.
Why it matters
The pledge gives Havana a clear political backer as pressure from the United States intensifies, including an oil blockade and reported military planning focused on the island. It also turns an anniversary statement into a sharper message to Washington: Beijing is treating Cuba’s political path and sovereignty as matters it intends to defend publicly.
The practical help China may provide remains unclear. For now, the significance is diplomatic rather than operational: Cuba has received an explicit commitment, while the United States faces a more openly opposed Chinese position over its campaign to force political change in Havana.
