What changed
Maintenance of the Sun Yat-sen statue and pedestal at Guangzhou’s Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall has finished ahead of schedule. The restored monument will be open for public viewing from the National Day holiday.
The work covered:
- Cleaning and repairing the pedestal’s granite surface.
- Regilding the inscription of Sun Yat-sen’s The Outline of National Reconstruction.
- Cleaning, derusting, structurally repairing and surface-protecting the bronze statue.
Why it matters
This is a careful refresh of a prominent piece of Guangzhou’s civic memory, not a reconstruction. The pedestal, built in 1931, stands south of the main memorial hall and rises 6.3 metres across about 115 square metres. Its renewed inscription and the statue’s restored, subdued sheen make the monument easier to read as both architecture and history.
The conservation approach also matters. Officials said the work followed minimum-intervention principles, preserving the monument’s existing form while addressing worn stone, metal and lettering. Visitors arriving during the holiday will therefore see an old landmark made clearer and more stable, rather than visibly remade.
