Andrew Scott to Star in ‘Sea Wall’ Stage-Play Film Adaptation

Andrew Scott is taking Sea Wall back to the stage, and this time the performance is headed for the screen.

Scott will star in a feature-film adaptation of Simon Stephens’ one-person play, which he first performed at London’s Bush Theatre in 2008. The project will be filmed during 19 performances at Studio Seaview from Oct. 16 through Oct. 30, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That makes the move more than a routine stage revival. Scott is returning to a role with nearly two decades of history behind it, while Stephens’ tightly focused drama gets a chance to reach people who may never sit in a theatre for a solo performance. The play was also staged on Broadway in 2019, with Tom Sturridge as its sole performer.

Analysis: The project’s biggest asset is its concentration. A single actor, a proven play and a performance built for close attention give Scott a strong screen vehicle without needing a sprawling production around it. It could also send audiences back toward the stage version, provided the film finds a meaningful release.

Initial reports do not yet establish the film’s production, financing, distribution or release plans. The next meaningful test is whether Scott remains attached as those details take shape.
