Mexican animators Roy and Arturo Ambriz are bringing their stop-motion fantasy “Ballad of the Phoenix” to the Venice Gap-Financing Market, running Sept. 4–6, according to Variety’s report.
The project is the follow-up to the brothers’ “I Am Frankelda,” described by Variety as Mexico’s first stop-motion animated feature. “Ballad of the Phoenix” follows Virian, a princess who flees after discovering her father steals souls to extend his life, then travels with a spirit guide named Phoenix.
Roy and Arturo Ambriz wrote and will direct the film for their Mexico City studio Cinema Fantasma, alongside producers from Woo Films and Cine Vendaval. The filmmakers said the story explores transformation, grief, family bonds and purpose.
Variety also reports that Guillermo del Toro encouraged the brothers to “go bigger” after their early crowdfunding work drew his attention. The Venice presentation could help the filmmakers secure international financing for the next stage of the project.
