New baby bank 'open to everybody'

BBC News

What changed

A new Forest of Dean Baby Bank hub has opened at The Ark Cafe in Newent, Gloucestershire, offering free children’s products every Tuesday from 09:30 to 11:30. It is explicitly open to everybody, with no means test, and provides items including wipes, breast pumps, clothing and swimwear, while larger goods such as cots can be sourced from a warehouse in Cinderford.

Why it matters

The useful idea here is simple: families do not have to prove they are in crisis before getting help. Parents can pick up what their children need and donate items that no longer fit, making the hub feel less like an emergency service and more like a local exchange.

That matters because the cost of caring for a baby arrives in small, relentless purchases: nappies, formula, wipes, clothes and equipment. The National Childbirth Trust says nearly half of parents reported being worse off financially after having a baby. Among self-employed, unemployed or part-time employed parents, that rose to about six in ten.

The hub’s support can therefore free money for something else, such as food or a day out with children. Its current demand is for autumn clothing bundles, while volunteers are already preparing Christmas boxes with festive clothes, blankets and shoes.

The practical question is whether donations and stock can keep pace with demand. For now, the opening hours are narrow, but the model is deliberately broad: anyone can use it, and anyone with something useful to give can help keep the shelves moving.
