What changed
The SEC’s Division of Examinations published a new handbook on October 1, 2026: “The SEC Exam Handbook: A Practical Guide on Process and Engagement.” It replaces and expands the agency’s previous examination brochure.
Why it matters
For firms examined by the SEC, the handbook offers a clearer guide to how an examination works and how engagement with the division is handled. That makes it a practical reference for preparing documents, coordinating responses and understanding the shape of the process.
The important limit is equally clear: the publication does not announce new examination requirements, enforcement priorities or compliance deadlines. Its immediate effect is procedural, giving SEC-examined firms a fuller explanation of the examination process rather than changing the rules themselves.
