What changed
The SEC’s Division of Examinations published “The SEC Exam Handbook: A Practical Guide on Process and Engagement” on October 1, 2026. It replaces and expands the division’s previous examination brochure.
Why it matters
For SEC-regulated firms, the handbook becomes the agency’s latest published guide to how examinations are conducted and how firms engage with examiners. That makes it a useful reference point for compliance teams preparing for an examination, even though the SEC has not detailed the handbook’s changes, effective date or any new compliance obligations.
The practical significance is therefore limited but clear: firms now have an updated process guide to consult. Whether it changes day-to-day compliance work will depend on the handbook’s fuller contents and how the division applies them.
