What changed
Captain Smit Machchhar says he opened the cockpit door of a Flydubai jet while injured, allowing passengers and crew to help stop an attack by the co-pilot.
The Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight plunged more than 17,000ft two hours after takeoff on Wednesday before the passengers and crew overpowered the attacker. The aircraft diverted to Saudi Arabia and landed safely. Machchhar was later flown to Abu Dhabi, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
Why it matters
Machchhar’s account turns a frightening loss of control into a story of control being rebuilt from inside the cabin. He was fighting for his own life on the cockpit floor, yet recognised that the aircraft was sinking and made one last attempt to open the door.
That decision brought other people into the crisis at the exact point when the flight needed more than one person to recover. Passengers and crew then helped restrain the attacker and regain control, preventing the descent from becoming a disaster.
The report gives no explanation for the attack or indication of what security or regulatory changes may follow. For now, the clearest consequence is personal: Machchhar is recovering from his injuries in Abu Dhabi, while the flight’s safe landing depended on a rapid handover of responsibility between the cockpit and the cabin.
