What changed
A ninth-grade pupil was arrested Monday morning after a principal and a teacher were shot at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille. No children were harmed; the principal, 53, and teacher, 37, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Students were confined and secured within seconds, and the pupil was detained immediately after allegedly entering with a gun and being restrained by a staff member.
Why it matters
The school’s emergency response contained the danger quickly, but two members of staff were still wounded inside a place meant for learning. The immediate focus is now the investigation: the suspect’s reported age is 14, while the motive has not been established.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez are due at the scene. Their presence signals that the shooting is being treated as a national matter as well as a local school crisis, even though authorities have not confirmed any connection to protests over school conditions.
