What changed

The G7 and partner countries agreed to release up to 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel through the International Energy Agency over four months, beginning immediately. A substantial diesel release is planned within the first 20 days, alongside a pledge by G7 members not to restrict energy exports to one another.

Why it matters

Diesel is the fuel that moves trucks and powers much of modern agriculture, so a squeeze quickly reaches food and other essentials. The agreement is designed to ease that pressure before it spreads further through supply chains.

The deal also removes a damaging threat from the table. Donald Trump had warned that the US could ban diesel exports unless European countries released more of their own stocks. Such a ban might have helped American consumers while pushing prices higher elsewhere; the G7’s mutual pledge makes that outcome less likely.

The early diesel release matters more than the headline total. Crude oil can influence the wider market, but diesel is the product facing the most immediate pressure for haulage and farming. The release’s effect will depend on how much each country contributes and how quickly those barrels arrive. Those details remain unspecified.

Markets have already shown how fragile the relief may be. Brent crude briefly fell below $100 a barrel after the announcement, then returned to about $102 as renewed strikes involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis raised fresh concerns about shipping through Bab-al-Mandeb.

The G7 will also coordinate refinery maintenance so several plants are not offline at once, and encourage countries with spare capacity to increase diesel production. That gives the agreement a second lever: use stored fuel now while trying to avoid another supply squeeze later.
