What changed

Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores, a 45-year-old candidate for the centre-left Ahora Nación party, was elected mayor of Queropalca, a remote district in Peru’s Huánuco region, according to exit polls. He won 229 votes, about 34% of ballots cast, beating the Renovación Popular Perú candidate by 25 votes.

Why it matters

Queropalca has fewer than 1,000 residents, and just over 700 people took part in the election. That makes the margin strikingly small in absolute terms but politically decisive: 25 votes will determine who leads the district.

Flores was born in Queropalca, roughly 360km from Lima. His unusual forenames, shared with Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini, have attracted far more international attention than the district’s size would normally generate.

The name is the story’s hook, but the local result is the substance. Flores now faces the ordinary work of governing a small Andean district, where a narrow victory still represents a clear choice among the residents who voted.

The result remains based on exit polls rather than a final certified tally, so the immediate watchpoint is whether the official count confirms the margin.
