What changed
Japan’s Fair Trade Commission searched premises linked to Asahi, Kirin and Suntory Spirits over allegations that major beer makers coordinated price increases. Sapporo Breweries was reportedly searched too, though that has not been confirmed. The companies had all raised prices in October 2022 and April 2025, citing higher raw-material, energy and transportation costs.
Why it matters
This turns a familiar cost-of-living story into a competition investigation. If companies that dominate Japan’s beer market coordinated their increases, the issue is not simply that bottles and cans became more expensive; it is whether customers were denied the benefit of genuine price competition.
Kirin said its brewery was searched over a suspected violation of Japan’s Antimonopoly Act and that it would cooperate fully. Suntory likewise confirmed an on-site inspection concerning domestic alcohol trade practices. Asahi also confirmed it was under investigation.
The allegation remains unproven. It is also too early to know the financial impact or whether penalties will follow. But the market reacted immediately: shares in Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo fell after the investigation became public. Suntory is privately held, so it does not have a publicly traded share price to absorb that shock.
