What changed

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has appointed Attorney General Letitia James to take over the investigation into allegations that a 20-year-old woman was raped by seven men at a Cornell University fraternity house in 2024. The investigation was reopened after the woman, identified in legal documents as Jane Doe, filed a civil lawsuit; her lawyer says online sleuths are now trying to expose her identity.

Why it matters

This case has moved beyond a disputed campus investigation into a test of how New York handles allegations that local institutions failed to pursue. Hochul said she had lost faith in the county prosecutor’s handling and promised to close a state-law loophole concerning rape charges when an alleged victim voluntarily consumes alcohol or drugs.

The lawyer says Doe was “completely, grossly intoxicated” and had been pressured into taking ketamine before the alleged assault. Those are allegations, not findings: whether criminal charges will follow remains undecided.

The online campaign has created its own harm. Women have posted videos saying “I am Jane Doe” to make identification harder, while online searches for the men named in the lawsuit reportedly led to an unrelated Marine Corps sergeant being served with the lawsuit and subjected to abuse and threats after a mistaken identification.

The next meaningful change will come from the new investigation: whether James’s office brings criminal charges, and whether Hochul’s proposed legal change alters how similar cases involving intoxication are handled.
