What changed
Donald Trump has chosen conservative commentator Katie Zacharia as the next White House press secretary, making her the sixth chief spokesperson across his two presidencies. Zacharia, 42, currently works for Trump Media & Technology Group and previously held a brief communications role at the Department of Homeland Security. Karoline Leavitt left the post in August.
Why it matters
The appointment puts a familiar Trump defender at the White House microphone. Zacharia has spent much of her career in conservative media and Republican politics, and Trump described her as loyal and a devoted supporter of his movement.
That background is the clearest clue to how the choice was made. A political science professor told the BBC that Trump’s second-term appointments have centred on personal affiliation and loyalty. Zacharia’s own public record fits that description: she has defended Trump’s policies on television, written in support of wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, and worked for his media company and Truth Social platform since June.
Her formal start date and the practical shape of the transition are not yet stated. The important test will be whether her appointment changes the administration’s press strategy, or mainly changes the person delivering it.
