What changed

Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old pensioner whose eviction became a national symbol of Spain’s housing crisis, has died, according to Madrid’s tenants union.

She was removed from her Madrid flat on 23 September after the rent rose from €500 to €2,650 a month. The owner later offered a reduced rent of €1,650, but that was still €300 above her monthly pension, and Abascal was in hospital before she could sign an agreement.

Why it matters

Abascal’s death turns a housing dispute into an even sharper political test. Her case already helped drive nationwide protests and pressure on Spain’s coalition government. Congress rejected emergency housing legislation last week, just as the promised route back into her home arrived too late.

The numbers explain why her story travelled so far. A long-term tenant went from paying €500 to facing a demand more than five times higher. Even the proposed compromise remained beyond her income. The eviction was not simply a change of address; it showed how quickly a home can become unaffordable when the rent changes faster than a pension can.

Protests continued in Madrid after her death, including a gathering at Puerta del Sol and a march to parliament. The political question is now harder to postpone: whether Spain’s government and Congress will pursue new housing measures after rejecting the emergency legislation. The cause of Abascal’s death has not been reported, but her eviction, hospitalisation and the failed legislative response have fused into one national grievance.

Her own message from hospital was simple: she had not managed to defend her home, but had fought so others could learn to defend theirs. That is why the dispute is unlikely to end with the keys to one flat.
