Netanyahu Says Motive Unclear After Attempted Flydubai Cockpit Attack

Israeli PM says it is too early to determine motive for attack on Dubai-Tel Aviv flight

What changed

A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a co-pilot allegedly stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar and apparently tried to crash the aircraft. Passengers and crew overpowered him, and the plane carrying 174 people landed safely in Tabuk; Machchhar was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it is too early to determine the motive or whether Iran was involved. The attacker was arrested in Saudi Arabia and may be transferred to the United Arab Emirates.

Why it matters

The flight’s emergency was contained, but the unanswered motive leaves three countries with a sensitive investigation on their hands. The aircraft departed Dubai at 03:05 GMT, descended more than 17,000 feet in under two minutes, transmitted emergency and hijacking codes, and then turned back toward Saudi Arabia.

The cockpit struggle also changed the outcome. Machchhar, despite being stabbed, helped open the cockpit door and resist the attacker. Passengers and crew then regained control, preventing what could have become a catastrophic mid-air disaster.

The next important distinction is between what happened on the aircraft and what officials may eventually claim about why it happened. Israel’s defence minister has described it as an attempted jihadist terror attack, but that classification remains an allegation rather than an established finding. Netanyahu’s caution on motive and Iranian involvement is therefore significant: the investigation has not yet supplied a clear explanation.

The passengers later reached Tel Aviv on a repatriation flight. The attacker’s questioning in Saudi Arabia, and any subsequent transfer to the UAE, should clarify whether this was an isolated act or part of a wider security case.
