What changed
A passenger allegedly stabbed Flydubai co-pilot Capt Smit Machchhar and tried to seize control of flight FZ1073, carrying more than 170 people from Dubai to Tel Aviv on Wednesday. The aircraft plunged about 17,000 feet, but passengers and crew restrained the attacker before the plane landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said investigators found indications the attacker had undergone Islamist radical indoctrination and may have intended to bring down the aircraft. The attacker, identified by Netanyahu as an Omani national, was arrested in Saudi Arabia and is expected to be transferred to the United Arab Emirates.
Why it matters
This was not simply an attack inside an aircraft. It briefly turned the cockpit into a struggle over whether the flight would continue at all. The plane had already entered Jordanian airspace before looping back toward Saudi Arabia, where it began a manual descent.
Machchhar was stabbed but is reported to be in good health and recovering. The passengers and crew also became part of the aircraft’s emergency response, restraining the attacker and helping restore control before landing.
Flydubai has suspended flights between Dubai and Tel Aviv while it investigates. That makes the incident an immediate disruption to the route, even before investigators settle the larger questions around motive.
Those questions remain open. Authorities in the UAE are examining whether the incident had a terrorist purpose or external involvement, while the attacker’s motive, intended outcome and eventual legal transfer are still unresolved. The next decisive development will be whether the separate investigations produce evidence that supports the early assessment that he meant to crash the plane.
