What changed
Polish authorities detained Jacek Dobrzynski, a Polish national suspected of planning an assassination attack against Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz.
The case began with an email forwarded to police by the State Protection Service, which protects ministers. Police arrested the suspect in Lower Silesia after security services held a special meeting over the alleged threat.
Why it matters
This is now a live security case around Poland’s top political leadership. Officials say the information suggested a strong likelihood that the threats could be carried out, and Tusk thanked police for what he called swift and decisive action.
The detention also shows how the alleged plot came to light: not through a reported attack, but through information passed from the ministers’ protection service to police. That distinction matters. The intended method, motive, collaborators and operational readiness have not been established, and detention alone does not prove an attempt would have happened.
Tusk has been prime minister since 2023, after previously holding the office from 2007 to 2014 and serving as president of the European Council from 2014 to 2019. For now, the central question is whether investigators uncover evidence that turns a serious warning into a defined plot.
