What changed
Pornhub has returned to Australia, eight months after Aylo withdrew from the market over the country’s age-verification rules. Access is limited to adults using Apple devices who have completed Apple’s age check with a credit card, passport, driver’s licence or government-issued ID.
Why it matters
Australia’s new system is now being tested through a split-screen reality: Apple users may get a standard adult experience, while people on other devices still cannot assume access will return.
Aylo’s argument is that age checks belong at the device level, with child-safety settings switched on by default until adulthood is confirmed. That could reduce the need for adults to hand personal documents to multiple websites, while making VPN workarounds less useful.
The unresolved question is whether regulators will accept Apple’s process as satisfying every requirement. If they do, the Australian market may move toward device-based checks; if not, access will remain uneven and the privacy debate will shift from individual websites to the companies controlling the devices.
