Russell Westbrook has announced his retirement after 18 NBA seasons, closing a career defined by relentless pace, rebounding from the guard position and a record-setting run of triple-doubles.
The announcement came in a video narrated by Michael B. Jordan, according to NBA.com.
A career measured in triple-doubles
Westbrook retires as the NBA’s career leader with 209 triple-doubles. He also owns the single-season record of 42, set during his 2016–17 MVP campaign.
Those records capture the breadth of his game. Westbrook repeatedly combined scoring, playmaking and rebounding at a level no other guard had sustained across so many seasons.
What the announcement means
The retirement ends one of the league’s most distinctive careers. Westbrook’s intensity and production made him an MVP, a perennial All-Star and the player most closely associated with the modern triple-double.
His records now become the clearest numerical marker of that legacy, while the announcement itself closes speculation about another season.
