What changed

TechCrunch reports that India’s Pocket FM has doubled its annualized revenue run rate from about $250 million a year ago to $500 million. The company reached $430 million in April and calculates the figure by multiplying monthly revenue by 12.

AI now powers 93% of Pocket FM’s catalog and 99% of its new content. CEO and co-founder Rohan Nayak said AI has made production about 80 times cheaper: 100 hours of content that once took roughly a year can now be produced in a day. Human creators still provide the ideas and storytelling, while Pocket FM’s tools handle tasks including writing and text-to-speech.

The approach has expanded the platform’s output. More than 550,000 creators now produce about 2.5 million hours of AI-powered content annually, compared with a catalog of roughly 100,000 hours two years ago. Pocket FM now has more than 770,000 audio series. Its 12-month revenue retention rate has risen to 76% from 44% two years ago, which Nayak partly attributed to the wider range of stories.

Growth also coincided with expansion into the U.K., Germany and France, and the launch of user-generated content in the U.S. Pocket FM said 96 titles have generated more than $1 million each, including 13 that have exceeded $10 million.

Why it matters

Pocket FM is using AI primarily as a production-scale tool rather than as a replacement for human creative direction. Its economics depend on turning creator ideas into finished audio quickly and cheaply, then using a much larger catalog to improve the odds of retaining listeners.

That model could make broad, highly varied entertainment catalogs more viable if the added volume continues to improve discovery and repeat usage. But the company’s results do not establish that fully autonomous content generation would produce the same outcome: Pocket FM still credits human creators with supplying the underlying ideas and storytelling.

What to watch next

The key test is whether Pocket FM’s faster production continues to translate into durable revenue and retention as its catalog expands. Its progress will depend on whether AI-assisted stories remain distinctive enough to attract listeners, whether creator participation scales with the company’s output, and whether international expansion and U.S. user-generated content add revenue beyond the current run rate.
