After hosting a meal with Big Tech leaders on Tuesday, President Donald Trump said concerns about AI safety guardrails no longer apply because US companies are “dominating China.” He also said his earlier claim that AI safety fears were a Democratic “hoax” no longer applied after he renamed the technology “Super Intelligence.”
Why it matters
The language shifts AI safety from a question of government oversight to a question of national competition. That is a meaningful change in framing, even if nothing has changed yet in law, enforcement or how companies build their systems.
For AI companies, the message is straightforward: American technological leadership is being presented as a reason to resist stronger guardrails. But “Super Intelligence” is not a reported policy instrument, and its practical meaning remains unclear. The real test will be whether this rhetoric is followed by a concrete safety rule, enforcement decision or implementation date.
