What changed

Tennessee has halted all executions for the rest of 2026 after two lethal-injection attempts failed to execute Christa Pike. Pike, 50, received two doses of pentobarbital on Wednesday, survived, and was taken to hospital; Governor Bill Lee has ordered an independent review.

The pause overlaps with Gary Sutton’s scheduled execution on 3 December. It follows another failed execution in May, when officials could not find a vein to administer Tony Carruthers’s lethal drug.

Why it matters

This is now a failure of Tennessee’s execution system, not a single mishap. The state says officials followed its approved protocol, while Pike’s lawyers say the attempt caused unnecessary agony and violated her right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment.

Lee called the episode one of the state’s most serious responsibilities and said there are “a lot of questions.” Those questions now include who will conduct the review and whether Tennessee will change its protocol or return to another execution method. The review’s investigator and Pike’s medical condition remain unclear.

The politics moved quickly. Senator Marsha Blackburn called for the electric chair to return, while her gubernatorial opponent, Jerri Green, called for a moratorium on future executions. That split turns the pause into more than an administrative delay: it is also a test of whether Tennessee responds to repeated failures by repairing lethal injection or abandoning executions altogether.

Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for killing 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Her attempted execution went ahead after last-minute legal challenges were rejected by the US Supreme Court. For now, the state’s next execution date is suspended, and the review will determine what happens next.
