What changed

President Donald Trump is considering creating a Camp David-like presidential retreat at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. He said the club would pay for construction as a “gift” to Americans, offer future presidents free memberships and provide accommodation for visiting foreign dignitaries.

Why it matters

This would move a presidential retreat from a secluded military facility in Maryland to a private golf club near an airport, city roads, members and frequent social events. Trump says the site is secure and lacks tall buildings where people could hide behind windows.

That changes more than the scenery. Camp David is staffed by the US Navy and Marine Corps, hidden from public view and protected by restricted airspace. Trump’s Florida proposal would place the same presidential function inside a much more visible, commercially run setting connected to his own club.

The proposal remains just that: no construction decision, design, approval, security arrangement or timetable has been confirmed. The practical question is whether a private club can become a presidential retreat without losing the privacy and security that make Camp David useful.
