What changed

Donald Trump is considering restricting US diesel exports and may ask European countries to release fuel reserves. Britain has already held talks with European partners about a coordinated response, while UK diesel prices have reached a record average of 199.79p per litre.

The stakes are large: the US exports 1.2m to 1.5m barrels of diesel a day.

Why it matters

A US export ban would remove a major supply source just as diesel markets are already under strain from disruption linked to the war in Iran, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and Russian export restrictions.

That matters because diesel is the workhorse fuel for haulage and agriculture. Demand is difficult to cut quickly, so a supply shock could show up in transport costs, farm operations and prices at the pump.

The political logic is straightforward. Trump says keeping surplus diesel in the US could ease pressure on American drivers, truckers and businesses ahead of November’s midterm elections. But the likely trade-off is higher prices elsewhere, especially in import-reliant markets such as the UK.

European governments still have reserves left from an earlier coordinated release, but the size and timing of any new release remain undecided. No US ban has been announced, so the immediate story is preparation rather than shortage; if Washington does impose restrictions, the pressure on prices would likely intensify.
