What changed

The US Justice Department is investigating ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and Fox News over their temporary suspension of shared White House pool coverage last month. The department requested communications about the suspension and is examining whether the networks violated the Sherman Act, which bars monopolistic business practices.

The dispute began after the Trump administration withdrew White House credentials from reporters at CNN, MS Now and Politico. A judge later ordered their access restored.

Why it matters

This puts two competing principles on a collision course: the government’s control over access to the president, and news organisations’ ability to act together when that access is restricted.

The networks’ pool system normally lets participating outlets share coverage of presidential events. Suspending it for several days turned a fight over three outlets’ credentials into a broader confrontation involving five major broadcasters and the Justice Department.

The investigation is only an inquiry. It has not established that the networks broke antitrust law, and it is unclear whether it will lead to enforcement action. The networks have not commented.
