What changed

UAE Attorney-General Hamad Saif al-Shamsi said the 29-year-old Omani co-pilot accused of attacking the crew of Flydubai flight FZ1073 began moving toward extremism while studying in Australia between 2015 and 2017. Officials also alleged that he planned to crash the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight into Tel Aviv airport, after reportedly being barred from flying by Oman Air over concerns about extremist views.

The captain was wounded with an emergency axe on 30 September. Passengers overpowered the attacker, retook control of the aircraft and helped divert it to Saudi Arabia. More than 170 passengers and crew were aboard.

Why it matters

This case now reaches across three aviation systems and two investigations. RMIT confirmed that the alleged attacker studied there but left before finishing his engineering qualification. Australian authorities are examining his links to the country through the Australian Federal Police, Victoria Police and ASIO.

The sharper question is not simply where his radicalisation began. It is how concerns serious enough to remove him from flying at Oman Air were followed by his recruitment at Flydubai. UAE officials say Flydubai carried out standard security checks that did not look for signs of radicalisation, but the details of those checks have not been established.

The allegations about his motives and preparation come from UAE officials and interrogation accounts that have not been independently verified. Investigators are also still assessing whether he acted alone. Those uncertainties matter because the answer will determine whether this was treated as an individual breach or as evidence of a wider failure in pilot screening.
