What changed
Yemen’s Saudi-backed government has announced military operations to retake territory held by the Iran-backed Houthis. President Rashad al-Alimi made the announcement after renewed strikes, Houthi pressure around Taiz and the group’s claimed attacks on Aramco sites in Riyadh and Khurais.
Why it matters
The fight is tightening around Taiz, the main frontline still held by government forces. The Houthis reportedly cut the supply route linking Taiz with Aden, effectively isolating the city and putting pressure on the government’s ability to sustain its position there.
The wider danger runs through Yemen’s Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, which the Houthis seized in September. Control of that route gives the conflict consequences far beyond Yemen, especially after the Houthis claimed attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure.
The clearest reading is that the announcement raises the stakes without yet proving that the war has entered a genuinely new phase. That will depend on whether government forces can reopen the Taiz-Aden route and whether Saudi Arabia confirms damage from the claimed Aramco strikes.
