What changed

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and four others died when a helicopter crashed near Kudenga Farm in Marondera on Wednesday evening, about 70km east of Harare.

Police said all six people aboard were killed. The helicopter reportedly took off from Gandami in Chikomba, where the couple were building a rural home, and crashed at about 17:00 local time. Two of those aboard were pilots. The cause is not yet known.

Why it matters

Chivayo’s death removes one of Zimbabwe’s most visible business figures from a public life built around government contracts, philanthropy and flamboyant displays of wealth. He led Intratrek Zimbabwe, whose reported $172m solar project in Gwanda became entangled in years of legal disputes.

His profile also carried political weight. Chivayo had publicised meetings with several African leaders, including Kenya’s William Ruto, who described him as a dear friend while offering condolences to the families of those killed. That visibility had made his access to power part of the story around him.

The crash therefore leaves two immediate threads: a fatal aviation investigation and unanswered questions around the business affairs of a figure whose contracts had attracted scrutiny. Authorities have not identified the other passengers publicly, and no cause of the crash has been established.
