Ethiopia Reshapes Defence System With AI, Drones and Cyber Capabilities

Ethiopia is reshaping its defence system after eight years of restructuring, with greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, drones, cyber capabilities, electronic warfare, specialized training and domestic production. In August, the Ethiopian National Defence Force signed an agreement with the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute to explore AI applications in logistics, training, cybersecurity, military healthcare, air operations and electronic warfare. Ethiopia has also established a Drone Technology Center, outlined a five-year Air Force capability roadmap and integrated airborne, commando and special anti-terrorist units under Special Operations Command.

Why it matters

This is a shift from counting equipment to building the systems that make equipment useful. Ethiopia is trying to connect research, training, command structures and local manufacturing so its defence force can maintain and adapt its capabilities instead of relying only on external suppliers.

That makes education and specialist skills as important as procurement.
