What changed

Kenya is being urged to close a policy gap on industrially produced trans fats. The country has not yet fully aligned with the World Health Organization’s recommended limit of no more than two grams of these fats per 100 grams of fat, as cardiovascular disease continues to place a growing burden on Kenya.

Why it matters

This is a policy issue with a very specific yardstick: two grams per 100 grams of fat. Until Kenya’s rules fully match that limit, the country’s approach to industrially produced trans fats remains out of step with WHO guidance.

The public focus on World Heart Day gives the issue a clear deadline for attention, even if no implementation timetable or enforcement plan has been reported. The next meaningful step is seeing how Kenya defines the remaining gap and whether it sets out a way to close it.
