Nigerian Workers Threaten Three-Day Strike Over Petrol Prices, Wage

What changed

Nigerian workers have threatened a three-day warning strike over high petrol prices and the minimum wage.

They want President Bola Tinubu to address those demands in his national broadcast marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day on Thursday, 1 October 2026. If he does not, the strike is set to begin on Friday, 2 October.

Why it matters

The deadline puts the president’s speech at the centre of a rapidly moving labour dispute. A national address that might otherwise mark a public anniversary now carries a practical test: whether Tinubu can answer workers’ concerns before they withdraw their labour.

The strike remains conditional. It is not yet clear whether Tinubu will address the demands or whether the action will go ahead and affect services.
