What changed
Tanzania’s Finance Minister, Khamis Mussa Omar, urged the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank to work more closely with member governments on major infrastructure projects. Speaking at the bank’s 11th annual governors’ meeting in Doha in 2026, he called for AIIB involvement before projects are chosen and prioritised, including technical and financial help to make them ready for implementation.
Why it matters
That shifts the conversation upstream. Tanzania is asking AIIB to help shape viable projects, not simply arrive later to finance them. The aim is to ensure infrastructure meets technical standards, supports economic growth and improves livelihoods while narrowing gaps between regions at different levels of development.
The agenda includes electricity, energy, digital systems, railways and environmental conservation, with governments and private investors also discussing how to mobilise capital. If AIIB adopts the approach, project preparation could become a larger part of how infrastructure reaches the financing stage. So far, there is no confirmed project selection or financing commitment.
