What changed

Prosecutors told a Hong Kong court that Abby Choi’s ex-husband, Alex Kwong, and his father and brother planned her murder in 2023. They say the men bought equipment to dismember her body, used two vans, and later tried to flee; all three have pleaded not guilty.

Why it matters

The case now turns on a detailed sequence rather than a single accusation. CCTV showed Choi entering one of the vans on February 21, 2023, with her last online activity recorded at 2:44pm. Around 3:20pm, the defendants were seen parking the vans near the property where police found parts of her body three days later.

Prosecutors also presented a hammer and cited forensic evidence matching it to blunt-force injuries on Choi’s skull. They allege the dispute began over a luxury property worth HK$60 million, which Choi had paid for.

That alleged financial motive remains for the court to assess, as does each defendant’s criminal liability. Alex Kwong was arrested on February 25 while allegedly preparing to leave Hong Kong. If convicted, the three men face life imprisonment.

The trial began on September 30 and is expected to continue until at least December.
