What changed
Chinese Premier Li Qiang and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon spoke by phone on October 12, 2026, agreeing to deepen cooperation ahead of the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. China proposed moving faster on negotiations over services trade, while both sides highlighted trade, tourism, travel, education and renewable energy, including electric vehicles, solar power and wind power.
Why it matters
The call puts practical economic ties at the centre of the relationship. Beijing wants more goods trade and access for services, alongside cooperation in clean-energy industries. Wellington reaffirmed its one-China policy and backed China’s hosting of the APEC leaders’ informal meeting, giving the conversation a clear diplomatic as well as commercial shape.
The next test is whether the warm language becomes an actual services-trade deal. No agreement, investment figure or timetable was announced, so the immediate outcome is political alignment rather than a completed economic breakthrough.
