What changed
Alexander Zverev defeated China’s Shang Juncheng 6-0, 6-3 in 55 minutes at the China Open, hitting nine aces to reach a quarter-final against Novak Djokovic on Sunday. Zheng Qinwen also advanced after Anna Kalinskaya retired injured at 3-0 in the third set, while Coco Gauff survived Camila Osorio 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.
Why it matters
Zverev now has a direct test against Djokovic, who has never lost a match in Beijing. The German is also chasing the world No. 1 ranking held by Jannik Sinner, who is absent from the tournament and will not play next week’s Shanghai Masters.
Zheng’s match showed the pressure that can come with a home crowd. Fans shouted during the first-set tiebreak, prompting her twice to tell them to stop. She recovered after losing the set, but Kalinskaya’s injury retirement means Zheng’s next challenge will come with an important question still open: how much can be learned from a match that ended before its natural conclusion?
Gauff’s win was less tidy but more revealing. She struggled with her serve, faced a determined Osorio and still found a way through long rallies. She next faces Chinese teenager Sun Xinran, ranked 582nd in the world, while Zheng will meet either Marie Bouzkova or Kimberly Birrell.
