What changed

Cenxi authorities opened a 12.2-kilometre tidal lane on the Cenxi–Luocheng section of the G2518 Shenchi Expressway during the National Day holiday, after congestion exceeded 5 kilometres.

Traffic police, road administrators, maintenance teams and Guangxi Cenluo Expressway Co. moved the central barrier and used police cars to guide vehicles into the heavier direction. Passage through the worst-affected stretch fell from about 50 minutes to roughly 10.

Why it matters

This was a traffic jam treated as a moving problem, not a fixed one. Before the lane opened, the section had accumulated nearly 130 minutes of slow travel and 12 kilometres of congestion. The temporary layout cut the queue within eight minutes and restored normal conditions within 12.

The reported gains were substantial: one-way capacity rose 28.4%, peak slow-travel time fell by about 80%, and speeds returned to 60 kilometres per hour within 30 minutes.

The practical lesson is simple. A motorway does not always need new pavement to absorb a holiday surge. It may need coordinated decisions, a movable barrier and people positioned where traffic actually breaks down. Whether the same approach will work beyond this holiday period remains uncertain, but in Cenxi it turned a long wait into a short passage.
