What changed
China’s autumn grain harvest passed the halfway mark by October 10, while winter wheat and winter rapeseed planting got underway.
Progress varied sharply by region:
- Southwest: 75% harvested
- Middle and lower Yangtze: more than 50%
- Huang-Huai-Hai: more than 60%
- Northwest: 55%
- Northeast: 35%
The push is also becoming more systematic. Yield-improvement programs now cover 1,000 counties and 20 additional cities. In Heilongjiang, rice farmer Ni Jicheng harvested 570 kilograms per mu across 600 mu using greenhouse-raised seedlings and dense planting.
Why it matters
The headline number is not just about speed. It shows how China is trying to raise output by making small gains across vast areas of farmland.
In Shandong’s Huantai County, corn planting density reached 5,116.8 plants per mu, up 14.3 from the previous year. In Henan’s Xun County, demonstration fields are pairing dense planting with drip irrigation, staged fertilising and combined crop treatments. The model is designed to spread beyond showcase plots into a 500,000-mu demonstration area.
Machinery is part of the same effort. Tractors suited to hills and terraces are working in Gansu, Chongqing and Sichuan. In Xinjiang, a 410-horsepower domestic hybrid tractor is reported to use about 20% less fuel than traditional fuel-powered machinery.
The practical test now is whether these methods translate into final nationwide gains. Harvest completion has passed 50%, but the final output, grain quality and farm profitability are not yet known.
