China Sanctions Paraguay and Belize Ministers Over Taiwan Ties

China sanctions ministers from Paraguay and Belize over Taiwan ties

The Straits Times

What changed

China imposed sanctions on Paraguay’s communications minister and Belize’s foreign minister on October 12 over their countries’ diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

The measures bar the ministers from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Chinese organisations and individuals are also prohibited from transactions, cooperation or other activities with them.

Why it matters

This puts ministers from two countries under the same pressure campaign, even though Paraguay is in South America and Belize is in Central America. China says the action protects sovereignty and security, and accused some politicians who support ties with Taiwan of being “anti-China.”

The dispute turns on a basic diplomatic divide: Beijing says Taiwan is Chinese territory, while Taipei rejects that claim and maintains its own separate government. For Paraguay and Belize, keeping relations with Taiwan now carries a direct personal cost for senior officials, not just an abstract foreign-policy disagreement.

The sanctions’ duration and the ministers’ immediate responses were not stated.
