What changed
Chongqing launched its 2026 international communication makers program on October 9, inviting university students, international students and young Chinese and foreign self-media creators to make short videos about the city. Led by the Chongqing Municipal Information Office with China News Service’s Chongqing branch and the Western International Communication Center, the program combines creator recruitment, a short-video competition, city communication activities and a creator conference.
The competition is now accepting entries across four themes: Chongqing’s landscapes and culture, its openness, its manufacturing, and its urban governance. Prizes include creative equipment worth 5,000 yuan for five first-place winners, 3,000 yuan for 10 second-place winners and 1,000 yuan for 20 third-place winners.
Why it matters
This is a bid to make Chongqing’s international image through many small lenses instead of one official camera. The program mixes open registration with targeted invitations, bringing students and young creators into a structured effort to show the city’s mountains, industrial past, street life and newer development.
That matters because the organizers are not planning a one-off contest alone. They intend to build recurring creator activities and regular programming around a new “Land-Sea Z Vision” brand column, giving selected work an external distribution channel. The planned creator conference will also announce the first group of participating makers and launch an international communication partners plan.
The useful test will be whether the format produces distinctive stories rather than a stack of polished tourism clips. For now, the program offers a clear pipeline: recruit creators, collect work, promote collaboration, and showcase the results. The contest’s eventual reach and influence will depend on the submissions and judging process, which have not yet been detailed.
