What changed
Guangxi held an agricultural investment and cooperation conference in Yulin on October 9, shifting its pitch from abundant resources to concrete projects, industrial chains and stronger brands.
Twenty-six modern agricultural projects were signed, with a reported combined value of 4.3 billion yuan. They cover food processing, smart agriculture, regional cooperation, integrated industries and sales coordination.
Why it matters
The message is straightforward: Guangxi wants more of the value created by its farms and fisheries to stay inside connected local supply chains.
The province already reports six agricultural industries worth 100 billion yuan each. It produces 60% of China’s sugar and silkworm cocoons, about one-seventh of its orchard fruit, and transfers or exports more than 10 million tonnes of vegetables each year. The new push is to turn that scale into processing capacity, coordinated sales and recognizable brands.
That explains the mix of participants. Government officials, companies, research institutions and financial organisations were brought into the same discussions, while products including Liubao tea, passion fruit, jasmine flowers and Luchuan pigs were displayed and promoted through sales meetings and livestreaming.
The headline figure is significant, but it is still a signing total, not proof that 4.3 billion yuan has already been invested or that the projects are operating. The next test is whether these agreements become functioning links between production, processing, research, finance and distribution.
