What changed
The Hong Kong Whampoa Military Academy Descendants and Relatives Association held commemorative events on October 11 to mark Sun Yat-sen’s 160th birth anniversary. Dozens of descendants and relatives of figures from the Tongmenghui, Nanshe and Whampoa Military Academy laid flowers at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Park, then followed his historical trail to the University of Hong Kong’s Loke Yew Hall.
Why it matters
The programme turned Hong Kong into a physical map of Sun Yat-sen’s early political life. Participants revisited places connected with his time in the city, including the years when he pursued knowledge and developed revolutionary ideas.
That makes the commemoration more than a ceremony at a statue. It links family memory to specific streets, landmarks and institutions, while keeping the theme of “Sun Yat-sen and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” rooted in place.
The association was formally registered in 2016 and says its purpose is to carry forward the Whampoa spirit and promote patriotic unity. Its latest gathering shows how descendants’ organisations continue to preserve that legacy through public rituals and historical walks.
