What changed

Chinese and Australian researchers have established a new lungfish genus and species from a roughly 360-million-year-old fossil found in northern Pakistan’s western Karakoram. They named it Kuragatalent fish, after the fossil’s collector, John Talent, and the Kurag area where it was found.

Why it matters

This is the first reliable lungfish fossil discovery reported from the Himalayan region since a 1966 “Himalayan fossil” fraud was exposed. That makes the specimen important twice over: it adds a new animal to the Devonian record, and it restores a credible piece of evidence to a region whose fossil history had been clouded for decades.

The specimen was collected in 1975 with field and stratigraphic records, then spent years largely unreadable inside a limestone block about 7 centimetres long and 4 centimetres wide. High-resolution CT scanning revealed the skull’s internal structures, including the braincase, nasal sacs, nerve canals and tooth plates. Those features supported its identification as a lungfish.

Lungfish are among the closest living relatives of four-limbed animals. They have lungs, internal nostrils and adaptations for dry conditions, making their ancient fossils useful for tracing how vertebrates occupied environments between water and land. The researchers provisionally place Kuragatalent fish in the family Holodontidae, but its exact position on the lungfish evolutionary tree remains unresolved.

More material from the site, especially the rear of the skull and the lower jaw, could show how this animal relates to other Devonian lungfish. For now, the clearest lesson is that a carefully documented fossil and modern imaging can reopen a scientific question that once seemed compromised by unreliable evidence.
