What changed

Foreign visitors are increasingly traveling to Sanya for traditional Chinese medicine treatment and wellness experiences. During the 2026 National Day holiday, one clinic expects 200–300 foreign clients and says it is operating at full capacity; Sanya Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine reports more than 8,000 foreign visitors in the first half of 2026 and expects 12,000–15,000 for the full year.

The visitor mix is widening beyond Russia and Kazakhstan to include Tanzania, Germany, the United States, New Zealand and Australia. Some come for repeat treatment, while others are exploring Chinese medical culture.

Why it matters

Sanya is becoming more than a beach destination. It is pairing resort travel with services such as acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, massage and tuina, making a treatment experience part of the itinerary rather than a separate medical journey.

The growth is substantial: the hospital recorded just over 1,000 foreign visitors in 2023, more than 10,000 in 2025, and over 8,000 in the first six months of 2026. Expanded visa-free access, direct flights, multilingual interpreters, medical staffing and the city’s warm coastal setting are helping remove the practical barriers.

The more cautious reading is that the numbers show rising demand, not yet a proven medical tourism model. The increase may include treatment, general wellness, cultural study and broader tourism, and the available account does not independently establish clinical outcomes. Still, full holiday schedules and returning patients suggest Sanya’s Chinese-medicine offering is moving from novelty toward a repeat-visit business.
