What changed

A single ship handled 28,684 containers at Shenzhen’s Yantian Port on October 2, setting a new Chinese record for cargo handled by one ship. Shenzhen Customs confirmed the figure.

Why it matters

The number is more than a one-day spectacle. It shows how much work Yantian’s network is being built to absorb: the port now operates 100 global routes each week, including 53 linking APEC economies, and has added 14 such routes this year.

That expanding network gives importers and exporters more connections to move goods internationally. In practical terms, the record points to a port becoming a larger junction in China’s trade infrastructure, with international logistics operators handling increasingly concentrated volumes through individual ship calls.

The ship, cargo and operating time were not identified, so the record alone cannot show whether this pace will continue.
