What changed
A five-day exchange for Taiwan youth and students from Guangdong opened in Guangzhou on October 12 at the former Whampoa Military Academy site. The program will travel through Guangzhou, Zhongshan and Zhuhai, combining historical visits, self-media training, city experiences and short-video production.
It is hosted by the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots’ publicity department and the Guangdong Taiwan Compatriots Association. Organizers want participants to use their own cameras and online channels to tell stories about young people building lives and ambitions in the Greater Bay Area.
Why it matters
This is more than a sightseeing itinerary. The program makes content creation part of the exchange itself: participants are not only being shown places, but asked to interpret them and publish what they see through their own perspectives.
That gives the initiative a practical test. Historical sites and city visits can create shared reference points, while short-video work gives participants a way to turn those experiences into public stories. Whether those stories travel beyond the program is still unclear, but the design shows how youth exchanges are increasingly being built around personal media rather than formal speeches alone.
The opening also coincides with the reported 160th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen’s birth. Organizers used that setting to connect the program with his patriotic and revolutionary legacy, while participants said they hoped to produce warm, grounded accounts of cooperation between young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
