At least 16 elderly residents died after a fire broke out at the El Edén nursing home in Pitrufquén, about 640km south of Santiago, at around 22:30 on Friday, according to BBC News. Ten other residents were evacuated. The fire was extinguished on Saturday morning, while firefighters cleared debris and removed collapsed corrugated-metal roofing.
Prosecutor Jorge Granada said the cause was not yet clear. President José Antonio Kast ordered a review of nursing homes nationwide to examine their condition, oversight, prevention measures, reported warnings and responses. Local mayor Jacqueline Romero said officials were supporting the victims’ families.
